چکیده

It is a well known phenomenon that in plants both development and metabolism are highly dependent on external factors, in particular on light. Biosynthesis of various compounds starts only after illumination; such a regulation has been reported also for carotenoids in different groups of plants. The main problem in the photoregulation of carotenoid biosynthesis is — like in the photoregulations of other processes — how can the organism translate the physical signal"light"into a biochemical signal and finally into physiological and biochemical events. The sequence of reactions in— volved includes the photoreception by a receptor pigment, the signal trans— duction and the regulatory level of the activity of carotenogenic enzymes. This review concentrates on the elucidation of these problems. The present state of knowledge is reported and discussed for three groups of plants — algae, higher plants and fungi — which might represent different mechanism types.

A Review on Biosynthesis, Health Benefits and Extraction Methods of Fucoxanthin, Particular Marine Carotenoids in Algae

Fucoxanthin, an allenic carotenoid, is abundant in macro and microalgae as a component of the light-harvesting complex for photosynthesis and photo protection. This carotenoid has shown important pharmaceutical bioactivity, exerting antioxidant, anti-cancer, anti-diabetic, anti-obesity, anti-photoaging, anti-angiogenic, and anti-metastatic effects on a variety of biological models. This caroten...

Tomato fruit carotenoid biosynthesis is adjusted to actual ripening progression by a light-dependent mechanism.

Carotenoids are isoprenoid compounds that are essential for plants to protect the photosynthetic apparatus against excess light. They also function as health-promoting natural pigments that provide colors to ripe fruit, promoting seed dispersal by animals. Work in Arabidopsis thaliana unveiled that transcription factors of the phytochrome-interacting factor (PIF) family regulate carotenoid gene...

Light-dependent regulation of carotenoid biosynthesis in plants

L. Pizarro, and C. Stange. 2009. Light-dependent regulation of carotenoid biosynthesis in plants. Cien. Inv. Agr. 36(2):143-162. Carotenoids are colored terpenes synthesized in plants, algae and some yeasts and bacteria. In plants and algae, these lipophilic molecules exert functional roles in hormone synthesis, photosynthesis, photomorphogenesis and photoprotection. Additionally, they possess ...

Cloning of tangerine from Tomato Reveals a Carotenoid Isomerase Essential for the Production of -Carotene and Xanthophylls in Plants

Carotenoid biosynthesis in plants has been described at the molecular level for most of the biochemical steps in the pathway. However, the cis-trans isomerization of carotenoids, which is known to occur in vivo, has remained a mystery since its discovery five decades ago. To elucidate the molecular mechanism of carotenoid isomerization, we have taken a genetic map-based approach to clone the ta...
